The Transformative Impact of an Engaging Education

Students have real-world experiences aboard school boat Quest II

Caleb Rose ’90 Returns for Another Quest

By Kelsey Capalbo, Director of Development, published in ViewPoints 2023-2024

With great joy and enthusiasm, Pine Point welcomed Caleb Rose ’90, a Pine Point alumnus, into our faculty this year. I sat down with Caleb to learn about the remarkable path that brought him back to our community as a teacher. Caleb’s journey is one of personal growth and is a testament to the impact Pine Point can have on shaping the lives of its students.

Caleb’s connection to Pine Point runs deep. He first joined us in 1986 as an incoming sixth grader, where he quickly found himself navigating academic difficulties. Reflecting on his time, Caleb recalls the challenges he faced and the supportive environment that allowed him to grow and learn. “Pine Point was the place where I felt comfortable making mistakes. It was a space where I discovered my interests, took risks, and developed confidence.”

A pivotal moment for Caleb was in ninth grade when he participated in the course known at that time as Oceanology. “Having the opportunity to go out on the water during the school day changed everything for me. When we were on the boat, I realized the academic struggles I was having didn’t matter. I saw myself go from a follower to a leader, and I started to imagine what I might do with my future.”

Real-world experiences build deeper understanding

In his role as a teacher, Caleb brings humility, experience, creativity, and enthusiasm to his classroom on 89 Barnes Road and beyond. Pine Point’s emphasis on off-campus studies has always been driven by the opportunity to enhance learning concepts while sparking joy, creativity, and empathy. Utilizing Pine Point’s boat, Quest II, Caleb exposes students of all ages to the “wonders of the wilderness,” fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation of their environment, and ultimately a love for our coastal community. These real-world experiences Caleb and all Pine Point teachers provide, amplify our curriculum by enabling our students to experience their world through a different lens, thereby building deeper understanding.

While Caleb’s primary role is Middle School science teacher, even our youngest learners know his name, as he has collaborated with colleagues in all grades and disciplines. Recently, Caleb worked with second and third graders to deepen their social studies unit, which focused on communities, by providing a real-world experience. Students joined Caleb aboard Quest II for harbor tours and outdoor explorations. “I love the different ways that they experienced the trip. Some were super excited about the boat itself. Others indicated that the group experience was important to them, and still others experienced the trip in completely unexpected ways and the way they represented the experience visually was interesting.” By providing the opportunity to see our community from a different perspective, Caleb helped our young students understand and appreciate the broader world around them, ultimately finding a sense of belonging in their local community.

Transformative impact of an engaging education

Caleb’s passion for teaching and his commitment to experiential learning embodies Pine Point’s educational philosophy of engagement, interdisciplinary exploration, and relational connection. As he continues to inspire students, Caleb exemplifies the spirit of lifelong learning and the transformative impact an engaging education has on students.

In a former student, Pine Point has found a teacher and a visionary educator dedicated to shaping the strong minds and caring hearts of its current and future students. His journey from student to teacher serves as a testament to the lasting legacy of Pine Point and the impact of a nurturing educational environment.
