How Personalized Attention Built an Alumna’s Confidence

To truly understand the “unique” nature of a Pine Point education, one must look at where our students go and, more importantly, who they become. For this edition of ViewPoints, Debra Smith, our Director of Enrollment Management, caught up with Cecelia ’25, a young alumna now navigating the challenges of high school with a distinct advantage. In this profile, Cecilia reflects on how Pine Point’s home-like environment fostered her ability to advocate for herself and how leadership opportunities—from mentoring younger peers to the milestone Ninth-grade Speech—transformed her into a confident communicator. From the classrooms in Stonington to hands-on marine biology research in Barbados, Cecelia’s journey illustrates the lasting impact of a curriculum designed to connect a small corner of New England with the wider world.

Personalized Attention

Cecelia emphasizes the personalization that Pine Point offers.”Knowing everyone in the school and being comfortable with all of your teachers made it feel more like a home than just a school.” That familiarity taught her to ask questions, take initiative, and advocate for herself—skills she now carries into high school.

Memorable Learning

Cecelia also recalls her ninth-grade trip to Barbados, where students applied lessons from school in a real-world context, connecting our small corner of New England with the wider world. “We did water testing like in our marine biology class, but in a whole new environment. It really helped me understand what we were learning by doing something hands-on.”

Growing Into Leaders

From being inspired by older students as a younger child to mentoring younger students later, Ceceilia’s experience reflects steady growth in leadership and empathy. These experiences, along with regular opportunities to practice public speaking, culminating in the Ninth-Grade Speech, helped her develop the confidence to articulate ideas clearly and speak up in any setting.
