A $250,000 Gift
In 2020, before the campaign was even in the planning phase, Starr made the very first gift to honor Pine Point’s 75th Anniversary. This gift would serve as a catalyst for the campaign that would emerge. As a member of the class of 1966 and with family ties that go back to Pine Point’s very beginning, Starr had a unique perspective on the opportunity this milestone represented in our long history.
Starr was part of the first group of students to make their home on Pine Point’s “new” campus at 89 Barnes Road in 1956. Later, her siblings would join her: Muffy ’69, Candy ’73, and King ’81. She has held many roles over her decades of service to the school, including, just as her mother had before her, and her sister, Candy, joining the Board of Trustees in 1989. Starr is currently a Trustee again, serving on the governance, finance, development, and campaign committees. A priority for Starr has always been fostering connections among our alumni, and in the early ’70s, she was the driving force behind Pine Point’s inaugural Alumni Association, a passion that continues today and through this campaign.
Since 1972, Starr has dedicated her career to serving independent schools and, for the past 24 years, exclusively in the fundraising and governance space. Her deep knowledge of what it takes for schools to succeed has made her a champion of endowments.
And for Pine Point, this has long been a family affair. Her grandmother donated five shares of IBM stock, which led to the official creation of Pine Point’s first General Endowment Fund in 1970. Decades later, Candy established the Class of 1973 Fund that continues to grow to this day.
“Pine Point’s endowment is a gift that represents a trust in the school, its mission, and its future. An endowment is crucial to any school’s long-term success, in part because it provides fiscal durability and stability to weather the ups and downs that all institutions face over time.”
Gifts to support the endowment, like Starr’s and her husband, Phil’s, create tremendous momentum for Pine Point, providing crucial funds that support the program today and light the way for a bright future.
