For many, middle school is viewed as a bridge—a period of transition to be weathered until the real work of high school begins. At Pine Point, we see these years differently. We believe the ages of 11 to 15 are a peak window for discovery, and that students needn’t wait for high school to find their footing as leaders.
On our 67-acre campus and aboard our research vessel, Quest II, our Grade 6–9 students serve as the active architects of their education. By removing the traditional 6–12 hierarchy, we place our oldest students at the center of the school’s culture. From leading morning meetings to conducting field research on the Long Island Sound, Pine Pointers have the agency to own their journey. When a student is treated as a leader, they don’t just get through the middle years—they build the grit and moral courage that lasts a lifetime.
Why the 9th Grade Year is a Leadership Game-Changer
In many schools, 9th graders are at the bottom of the high school hierarchy. At Pine Point, they are the seniors. As the oldest students on campus, they hold the highest leadership positions available to any student, lead the sports teams, and set the tone for students ages 3 to 14. This peak leadership year builds a unique, unshakable confidence before they move on to competitive secondary schools.
Because we understand the importance of this leap, we do not leave their next steps to chance. Our dedicated secondary school placement team works individually with every 9th grader to navigate the application process with poise. From SSAT preparation and essay coaching to mock interviews that build professional communication skills, we ensure our soon-to-be graduates are fully prepared to build their next chapter. Whether they choose local independent schools or prestigious regional boarding programs, Pine Point graduates arrive with the self-assurance to lead from day one. Their adventure doesn’t end at graduation; explore our alumni stories to see where our graduates go next and read how a Pine Point foundation leads to a lifetime of leadership in fields ranging from medicine to marine biology.
Research in the Field
While many middle schoolers only read about marine biology, our students live it. Aboard our research vessel, Quest II, students serve as crew and scientists. They collect data, analyze local water quality, and study the Long Island Sound ecosystem firsthand. Here, they learn that science isn’t a textbook chapter—it’s an active responsibility to our local environment.
Public Speaking as a Daily Habit
At Pine Point, public speaking is a daily practice. While our weekly All School and Middle School meetings provide a stage for students to lead an audience of 200+, the brave work of speaking happens every day. From presenting complex projects in class to announcing communal lunch procedures, our students are the constant facilitators of our campus life. By the time they graduate, speaking with clarity and conviction has become second nature.
The Result: Purposeful Preparation
Pine Point graduates arrive to high school with a defined sense of self. They’ve already been the leaders, the researchers, and the mentors. The success of our placement process is written in the stories of our alumni. Our graduates are sought after for their leadership and character at premier institutions ranging from the academic rigors of Phillips Academy Andover and the specialized innovation of the Marine Science Magnet High School to the creative, hands-on environment of The Putney School. Additionally, many of our students continue to lead right here in our community, excelling in the honors and AP programs at their local high schools. No matter the destination, Pine Pointers arrive with a defined sense of self and the ‘grit’ to succeed.
Don’t let these formative years be a transition. Let them be the foundation.
